Societal impact of research

My research has benefitted built environment experts, national and international NGOs as well as children and young people and their families, communities, practitioners and policy-makers working at local, regional, national and international scales.

Key areas of impact include urban planning and crisis preparedness for children and the most vulnerable communities with a specific focus on the delivery of key services and the access to education, food and play/leisure, the issues facing post-pandemic cities, climate change and local democracies and the future directions of planning education in South Africa.

I have been leading on the following initiatives:

  • Lead Author for a joint-paper with UNESCO-Education (Paris Headquarters) on Schools as Hubs
  • Lead Author for a Call for Action with UNICEF (Urban Global Unit – NYC Headquarters) on the provision of better services and public spaces for urban children and young people.
  • Input into the 2023 Children’s Alliance’s new report ‘A Plan for Play’ building on how during the pandemic, children and young people from less advantageous backgrounds in particular saw their right to play being ignored, with significant long-term consequences.
  • Input as advisor on the New Transport Strategy for the Southeast of England (Planning for Healthy and Connected Places) (2024).
  • Ongoing discussion with RTPI, RICS, ARUP, IFT/OECD, GDCI/Global and Bloomberg Philanthropy as per the future directions of post-pandemic cities and the challenges facing crisis preparedness and the adaptations of streets and open spaces.
  • Input into South Africa policy frameworks in partnership with SACPLAN via CBE Transformation Indaba, DALRRD, SALGA, the Department of Home Affairs, and the National School of Governance, through the draft Critical Skills list from the Department of Home Affairs (2019-2022).
